Regional cleavages in African politics: Persistent electoral blocs and territorial oppositions

Do socio-economic cleavages shape electoral dynamics in African countries? Previous individual-level and party systems research on politics has de-emphasized factors, contributing to the common view that ethnic short-term alliances define both locally nationally. Focusing Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, we draw methods geography offer a spatial analysis of geographic patterns constituency-level returns over three decades reveals existence persistent regional voting blocs that, their temporal stability multiethnic character, are not well explained by prevailing theory. The anomalies open door reinterpretation national structure countries takes clustering as clue etiology. We propose an interpretation focuses core-periphery electorates, following Lipset Rokkan's (1967) classic model territorial oppositions undergoing political economic integration modernization.
